Whether you call it a crisp or a crumble, there’s nothing quite like a warm apple crisp in the fall! There’s something special about the soft, yet firm apples together with the warmth of cinnamon and spices combined with the crunch of the topping. The only thing that makes it better is topping it all off with cold, melty ice cream, whipped cream and sipping a cup of hot mulled cider! It’s a mouth-watering delight of the senses.

Pick Your Own Apples from Our Orchard. A mix of apples tends to lend a great texture and flavor to your apple crisp. Apples that would make a good crisp that you should be able to pick this weekend are:
Macoun – A great baking apple that’s not too sweet or tart.

SunCrisp– a flavorful baking apple
McIntosh – a favorite but best with other apples as it cooks down to sauce-like
consistency
Fuji – Sweet and well-liked, Fuji will hold their shaped when baked.
Cameo – Firm and crisp with highly appealing aromatic flavor. Very similar to old-fashioned Red Delicious. Holds shape when cooked.

Cortland – The standard in baking apples. Firm and crisp. Holds shape when cooked.

APPLE CRISP RECIPE

Apple Preparation:
6 cups (6-8) apples, cored, peeled and sliced
2 tablespoons flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt

Crisp Topping: (or grab our crisp mix from store)
1 cup flour
1 cup brown sugar (half light brown, half dark brown)
1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup butter, softened
Mix apple ingredients together in a bowl. In another bowl make the crisp topping by mixing together dry ingredients, then cut in butter until crumbly. Place the apple mix in 2 quart casserole and sprinkle with crisp topping. Bake at 375F until bubbly, about 45 minutes.
